17th Century French Verdure Landscape Tapestry with a Dog Chasing an Exotic Bird

About the Item

An antique 17th Century French Verdure Landscape Tapestry, envisioning a scene in which a dog chases an exotic bird at left, and a villagescape is visible in the middle distance. There is a large tree branch extending at the top end of the central pane, with acanthus leaves and bushes on the left side, and a pathway with steps on the right side. The tapestry has a Chinoiserie feel, with an Orientalist aesthetic in the execution of the trees and domiciles depicted throughout. This is a delightful piece, which balances the tranquility and harmony of the verdure landscape, with the action and frenzy of the hound chasing the bird at right. Hand-woven with wool, and with silk inlay in some of the finer points of articulation of design. In very good condition for its age, weaving style, and composition, with slight wear, fading, and oxidation, all typical for items of this vintage. There is a protective linen backing on the rear side, with a strip of Velcro at the top end, for convenience in affixing the piece to one's wall.
