After Alexander Calder Jute 'Sun' Tapestry, 1974 Guatemala
About the Item
Extremely rare Alexander Calder jute tapestry. This is the 'Sun' design tapestry. Made in Guatemala, in 1974. Bon Art fabric label to upper left reads "Bon Art Woven art hand crafts of maguey fiber, Made in Guatemala." Second Bon Art label on reverse side as well. These tapestries were made to benefit a natural disaster in Central America. There was an earthquake in 1972, in Nicaragua and Guatemala that killed hundreds of people and a group of artists formed a relief fund. Each artist contributed limited edition art which was sold, and the money gained was used for the earthquake victims. This piece is number 60 of 100 pieces made. Numbered at bottom left. Original circular rings to reverse for hanging on the wall. Calder adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the rugs are in museums today. Great condition.
