1832 Sampler by Jane Bennett. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colors black, blue, green, brown and white. Verse reads, 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to Stand> As the first effort of an infant hand> And while her fingers on the canvas move> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children Let her have a part> And write thy name thyself upon her heart'. Signed and dated, 'Jane - Bennett Rugby - 1832'. Placename Rugby is a town in England. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, potted flowering plants, blossoming trees, butterflies and a bird. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked onto a wooden stretcher frame with card backing. Frame backed with wood.
