About the Item

Immerse yourself in the allure of this mid-20th-century French tapestry, showcasing a design inspired by a 15th-century woven masterpiece titled "Cerfs Ailés" (winged stags) at Rouen Museum. Adorned with exquisite hues of red, yellow, pink , green, brown and blue, this hand-printed masterpiece is meticulously hand printed in cotton foundation at the renowned workshops of Artis Flora , adding a touch of uniqueness to your space. Elevate your surroundings with this enchanting piece of history. Description of the original masterpiece : The Tapestry of the Winged Stags is a large piece of wool and silk (3.47m x 3.80m). It depicts three winged stags, emblems of the King of France since Charles VI. Crowns and coats of arms with the fleur-de-lis on an azure background hang from their necks. One of the stags is lying in the middle of an enclosure, holding in its paws a red banner adorned with golden suns and featuring Saint Michael, the protector of the Kingdom of France, slaying the dragon. Around the banner pole and on either side of the three stags, the following inscriptions can be read on three banners: - This standard is a sign that loyal Frenchmen never abandon if they do not want to give up their honor. - Glorious arms, victorious above all. - So noble a [thing] under the heavens I could not [carry] better. The animals are depicted in a lush natural setting, scattered with flowers and bushes, in the tradition of "thousand-flower" tapestries highly appreciated in the Middle Ages. Additionally, this scenery holds heraldic significance, with irises and roses being attributes of Charles VII. The ensemble stands out against a backdrop of a maritime landscape. ✨✨✨ "Experience the epitome of luxury and craftsmanship with our exquisite collection of carpets and tapestries. The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...
