Italian Tapestry Parade Banner City of Fiume Symbol Painted Fabric Golden Thread

About the Item

Beautiful Italian fabric tapestry in bordeaux velvet background with hand painted coat of arms representing the city of Fiume symbol with golden thread classic decors on the sides. After WW1 the city of Fiume or Rijeka was not assigned either to Italy or to Yugoslavia by the Treaty of London, which defined the post-war borders in the area, so, being the Austro-Hungarian monarchy dissolved, negotiations over the future of the city had started but were soon interrupted. In September 1919 a force of Italian nationalist irregulars led by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio captured the city. Because the Italian government, wishing to respect its international obligations, did not want to annex Fiume, D'Annunzio and the intellectuals at his side eventually established an independent state, the Italian Regency of Carnaro, a unique social experiment for the age and a revolutionary cultural experience in which various international intellectuals of diverse walks of life took part (like Osbert Sitwell, Arturo Toscanini, Henry Furst, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Harukichi Shimoi, Guglielmo Marconi, Alceste De Ambris, Whitney Warren and Léon Kochnitzky). To distinguish themselves from the monarchy and empire, they took the historic symbol and coat of arms of the city itself but displaying the eagle without crowns and with only one head instead of two. The left foot holding an amphora with the flowing water with INDEFICENTER, ‘with no end’, and refers to the river to which the city is named for, being Fiume the Italian for river, while Rijeka the croatian. We do have as well a similar one representing a single-headed eagle with a star, probably an Austian Monarchy symbol of the same age.
