large and rare 17th century tapestry (elephanteau) - N°1340

About the Item

This Charming Aubusson Historical Tapestry depicts "The Story of The Elephant Who Had a Rope in its Leg" In the middle of the Tapestry we see the Queen giving this important lesson to her little Prince: It's awfully similar to what we humans experience in our own lives: we imagine ourselves with a rope on our leg. And, even worse, we often invent this one to prevent us from aspiring to something else. Surely you have heard of baby elephants whose legs are tied with a rope and attached to a solid object. The first few days, the animal tries by all means to free itself, without result. After a while, exhausted, he finally abdicates, that is to say, he understands that it is useless to try to free himself. It is then that only a rope around the leg is enough to condition it to stay put. No need to attach it to a solid object.
