Late 17th Century French Aubusson 'Verdure' Tapestry

About the Item

A fine example of an Aubusson 'Verdure' tapestry from the end of the 17th century, depicting a densely wooded landscape, with shrubs and more delicate foliage in the foreground. The tapestry is surrounded by an extravagant floral border. Hand-woven in wool, the predominantly blue, green and cream hues are still delightfully vivid.The small French town of Aubusson, on the River Creuse, is famed for its tradition of weaving elegantly elaborate tapestries. They often depicted romantic pastoral, historic or architectural scenes and became much sought after throughout Europe. Circa 1680.
