Modernist Portuguese Needlepoint Rug, Mid-20th Century

About the Item

Modernist Portuguese Green and Yellow Needlepoint Rug / Wall-hanging, Mid-20th Century This eye-dazzling piece from the mid-20th century would work perfectly on the floor or the wall, either horizontally or vertically. Portuguese needlepoints were woven from at least the 16th century. Due to the nation's maritime history, design influence has been varied, with Indian inspirations particularly popular throughout the eighteenth century. This piece, using contrasting black and white and a yellow-to-green gradation, is a perfect example of how the traditional technique was adapted in the 20th century to create designs fully in tune with European modernist aesthetics.
