Pair of Sailors Woolwork Pictures of Man-of-War Ships

About the Item

Pair of Sailors Woolwork Pictures of a Man-of-War Ships. Worked in wool on a canvas ground. Colours white, blue, brown, red, pink and cream. Both feature a three-masted Man-of-War ship, flying a British red ensign flag (a flag that originated in the early 17th century as an English ensign flown by the Royal Navy and later specifically by British Merchant Seamen). One of the pictures shows the ship full sail. In the other picture sails are down and furled away. Both framed in an old, possibly original, gilt painted wooden frames. Rippled, old glass. Tacked onto a wooden stretcher frames and backed with brown paper. (Dimensions details - Larger, full sail example: excluding frame: 14.8ins high, 19.5ins wide. Including frame: 19.75ins high, 24.5ins wide. The smaller, sails down example: including frame: 19ins high, 24ins wide.). Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

    Good. The full sail example: A few small holes around the outer edge. Slight fading. The sails down example: One small hole to the outer edge, top centre. Slight staining in top right corner. Both are neatly and evenly stretched. Frames sound.
