About the Item

Tapestry. After the "Conquest of Tanger" from Pastrana. Real Fábrica de Tapices de Santa Bárbara (Royal Factory), Madrid, Spain, Ca second third of the 20th century. The tapestry is framed by a selvedge separated from the field by a yellow band. It does not have a border, and it shows a military scene in the countryside. On the upper part, written in golden gothic script on a red background, is the legend: "The serene and undefeated king of Portugal and the Algarves whose reign extends from here to here and beyond the sea of \u200b\u200bAfrica as he knew that the city of Tangier was unguarded and took advantage of this fausta opportunity and sent D. Juan, son of the Duke of Braganza, to occupy and fortify it, which he fulfilled on August 29, 1471. " Under this rectangle are placed a large number of horsemen and infantry soldiers, armed with spears and carrying shields and shields, carrying banners and banners, dressed in medieval armor and various helmets, with a walled construction to the right and a series of elements of landscape situating the scene (waters, trees, plants ...) in a context. The composition of the field, the clothing of the figures, etc. they make us think of the inspiration in a work of the 15th century for the realization of it, both in its theme and in its technique. Thus, one discovers the similarity with the tapestry of the "Toma de Tangier" of the set known as "The Tapestries of Pastrana", conserved in the collegiate church of the village of Alcarreña and that visually narrates the African campaign of Alfonso V of Portugal in 1471 in a series titled "of the Conquest of Asilah and Tangier by Alfonso V of Portugal", composed of four panels of an exceptional size (up to 11 x 4 meters each) and an extraordinary quality. In particular, the present shows a fragment of the original, located to the left of the fortress that appears in it. Towards the lower right corner, on the selvage, the tapestry brand can be seen. The crowned M and D allude to the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara, located in Madrid. It is known that the Government of the Republic accepted in 1932 that the Real Fábrica de Tapices de Madrid began an ambitious project, exposed by the Academician Miguel Utrillo (18621934) and Livinio Stuyck Millenet (1875-1942), to replicate in it the series of tapestries of the Collegiate of Pastrana mentioned, work that was completed towards the middle of the 20th century.
