Vintage 1960s Hand-Printed French Wall Tapestry in Wool Signed by J.C. Bissery
About the Item
An exceptional and very rare wall tapestry from the 1960s in amazing condition. This large and stunning wall tapestry in wool has been designed and signed on the back by the French artist Jean Claude Bissery (born in 1930). The artists woven signature can also be seen in the lower right corner of the tapestry. The colorful motif is called "Canzonetta" and it was hand-printed in a limited edition by the maker Corot, located at 65 Champs-Elysées in Paris. According to the label on the back (see photo), this is sample number 14.
Jean Claude Bissery is mostly known for his wall tapestries dating from the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of his work comes in rather dark color schemes and color combinations popular at the time: brown, orange, red, yellow and green paired with black. In other words, this vivid art work in cheerful tones of pink, blue, green and beige is really a rarity. This sample is also rare by its size: approx. 66 x 38 inches. Most of the vintage works by J.C. Bissey found on the market are smaller in size. This size will fit perfectly on the wall over a bed or a sofa.
The tapestry is made of 100% woven wool and according to the label on the back, it can be cleaned in lukewarm soap-water or dry-cleaned professionally. The back of the tapestry is covered (hand sewn) with a beige linen fabric. As mentioned earlier, the back has a textile label with J.C. Bissery's signature in ink (see photo).
In very good condition. The tapestry has not been cleaned since its recent discovery. Most likely this tapestry has never been on display: it has no signs of fading or wear at all. Nor are there any signs of any hanging mechanisms on the back. It has probably been stored for a very long time away from both light and humidity. There are some signs of dirt on the upper and the lower opposite edges, most likely from the storage (see photos). However, according to the washing instructions on the back, these minor traces can be washed if so wanted.
Dimension: approx. width 167 cm/ 65 3/4", approx. height 97 cm/ 38 1/4".
The hems are hand-sewn and the tapestry is therefor not exactly rectangular.
