White and Indigo Dyed Yoruba Fabric Vintage West African Textile from Nigeria

About the Item

This textile is made from heavy weight hand spun cotton with luminous natural indigo dyed details. The white is in fabulous condition, it is an unusual cotton or linen based fiber with a slight sheen. It came from a collection of African Textiles acquired in the 1970s. This textile was made in the mid 20th century, circa 1950. It was used as a prestigious wrap, only used on an important occasion such as a procession, hence its fabulous condition - the ends are finished and sewn by hand. Perfect for a wall hanging or textile for styling. Could also be repurposed for upholstery or pillow covers. For centuries before the introduction of synthetic dyes, the ability to transform everyday white cotton into prized deep blue cloth was a mysterious and highly valuable skill passed on by specialist dyers from generation to generation. This piece comes from Joseph Carini's Private Reserve Collection. On his travels around the world, Carini has curated a collection of fine and rare vintage textiles and rugs. He is enamored by ancient techniques, natural dyes, and cultural symbology. Joseph Carini is the founder and designer of Carini Carpets. Carini’s design philosophy is heavily influenced by historical contexts and nature, merging his graphic and organic design interests with his considerable knowledge of decorative arts, architecture, and industrial design history. His expertise in exotic natural dyes and hand-processed materials has become a cornerstone of his work. Joseph Carini is known for his innovative approach, constantly experimenting with design concepts and natural materials. He works closely with designers and clients, offering his expertise to help realize their visions while ensuring practical and aesthetic success.
