About the Item

A fine small amusing plaster wall sculpture by Tore Strindberg (1882-1968). The subject is Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden with Eve offering Adam an apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil and he is just about to take a bite. A serpent is curling up against Adam and on his left side is cupid kneeling, looking down and covering the face with the hands in despair. Signed and dated Strindberg 1926. A tergo text in Swedish and signed twice with monogram T. S. and in full Tore Strindberg SCULPT. He has named the sculpture "Bettet" translating into "The Bite". Tore Strindberg, was a Swedish sculptor and medal engraver and studied for the medal engraver Adolf Lindberg at the Royal Mint in Stockholm 1898–1902 and then at the Art Academy 1902–07. After his studies he stayed for a period in Paris and after returning home he was entrusted with the execution of an altarpiece for Hjorthagen's chapel in Stockholm; for the Engelbrekt Church in Stockholm, he executed a series of decorative stucco reliefs and the wooden sculpture Christ in 1909–1911. He is mainly known for bronze sculptures in a classicizing and realistic style from the 1920s and 30s. The most familiar is "Crokus", a graceful sculpture of a young girl that symbolizes the transience of youth, and on Järntorget in Gothenburg the large well "The five continents", which was unveiled in 1927. As a medal artist, he created plaques and medals for, among others, Selma Lagerlöf, Anna Retzius, Karl Starbäck and the jubilee medals for the Olympic Games, and others. He also executed a number of busts. Strindberg was very active as an exhibitor and participated in a number of international exhibitions in, among others, Venice, Vienna, Reykjavik and Copenhagen, as well as exhibitions arranged by Sweden's general art association. He was awarded a scholarship from the Academy of Arts in 1925 and the City of Stockholm's cultural scholarship in 1960. Strindberg is represented at, among others, the National Museum and the Modern Museum, the Thielska Gallery in Stockholm, the Rottneros Sculpture Park, the Gothenburg Museum of Art and the Malmö Museum.
