Antique French Carved and Painted Louis XVI Style Panel, Circa 1870

About the Item

Neoclassicism was a movement in history that was inspired by culture from classical antiquity, specifically the ancient Roman and Greek Empires. In France, this movement coincided with the reign of Louis XVI and was often incorporated into art and furniture. This hand-carved and painted panel from circa 1870 is a beautiful example of a French Louis XVI-style offering with Neoclassical motifs. The background of the panel has been painted a light blue color, allowing the beige colored carvings to really stand out. In the center of the panel is a hunting trophy consisting of a quiver of arrows running through a strung bow. The bow and arrows are set within an oval with cavetto molding that is topped by a large crinkle ribbon bow that hangs down past the oval, where it bundles a pair of sprawling branches. Tips of the branches climb upwards towards a pair of husked swags that run between the ribbon and the oval. The swags extend through chain links that were carved in the upper corners, just inside the thick molding that surrounds the entire rectangular panel. Rigging on the backside allows our Louis XVI-style panel to be installed as sculptural wall art, which will instantly enhance any room where it is displayed.
