Antique Rustic and Elegant 19th century Spanish porcelain decorative plate

About the Item

Anonymous Valencia (probably Manises), Spain; 19th century Ceramic Approximate size: 10.6 (diameter) x 2.75 (depth) inches A lovely polychrome ceramic plate probably made in Manises, famed for its production of distinctive Spanish pottery. The present example features a superb floral motif with a pair of yellow-orange flowers accompanied by leaves. The border features a unique schematic fretwork design. The plate is reinforced by an antique tin or pewter hangar for mounting on a wall. Condition commensurate with age with some minor chipping along the edges and subtle hairline cracks in the glaze. NOTE: available to ship in October 2023

The original lid is lost-to-time, yet its provincial beauty remains attractive and sublime. The present example—baked with white enamel and decorated with a lovely hand-painted polychrome lattice and floral theme—is warm, elegant and rustic. The curving linear form of the flowers subtly recall the influence of Japan’s Kakiemon style present in France during the Rococo period yet is still indebted to the earlier influence of Italy’s prolific maiolica workshops.
