Bronze Relief of General Capiliata Colleoni in Giltwood Frame

About the Item

A spectacular bronze relief of sublime detail depicting the General Capiliata Colleoni in profile. The general is shown wearing a plumed helmet and cuirass with sculpted breastplate aegis. The inscription notes the friendship of the warrior with the Florentine author Boccaccio. The original work is in the esteemed collection of the Musée Jacquemart-André. The marble is attributed to the Venetian master Tullio Lombardo and may have been intended for the base of the famed equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni designed by Andrea del Verocchio, master of Leonardo da Vinci, and executed by Aessandro Leopardi. Alternative theories pose the relief as perhaps being part of a sarcophagus in the Colleoni Chapel in Bergamo. According to Dr. Matteo Ceriana of the Museo Nazionale del Bergello and the Galleria Palatina di Palazzo Pitti, the sculpture is a masterpiece of late 15th-early 16th century Venetian sculpture. The present relief was struck from this piece, which still bears oil staining from the creation of the mold. It is conjectured that when the Palazzo Porto Colleoni in Thiene passed to the Colleoni family in 1816 following the tenure of the Porto family that this relief was created. The relief was recorded in a book by Sebastiano Rumor about the castello in 1889. The bronze was acquired by the Canessa brothers in 1915 and was a part of their celebrated collection and displayed in their New York Gallery located at 680 5th Avenue. Images of the relief in situ in the gallery are preserved and are included in the object gallery. By 1921 the piece was accessioned by the St. Louis Art Museum where it remained until acquired by Klismos Gallery in 2017.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The patina of the bronze is in excellent condition with minimal wear. Giltwood frame retains much of its original gilding with scattered areas of repair.
