"Cycle of Time" Gold embroidered leather wall hanging by Anita Carnell

About

Anita Carnell is a London-based artist who realises conceptual art through her expertise with textiles and needlework. She is a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework, has an MA from the Camberwell School of Arts, is a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and is a gold standard member of the British Crafts Council. Her work has been exhibited at the prestigious Saatchi, London. Her collection of hand-stitched leather wall art engages material that is part of the fabric of British heritage, in particular the use of the same golden wire used for formal dress by Royalty, the Military, Livery Companies and Guilds for over three centuries. She presents in contemporary form traditional embroidery techniques such as back stitching and couching to explore the concept of ‘Ma’ (a Japanese word, meaning negative space) through leather panels hand-stitched in gold. Carnell’s use of leather is inspired by ninth century Cordovan and Spanish moulded and decorated leather wall hangings which were used to adorn the palaces of Europe. She works with the natural shape of the hide, and threads her inspiration with her expertise, hand-stitching forms in gold thread, exploring the visible and invisible, and the passing of time. Time is Carnell’s underlying theme. In ‘Cycle of Time' the viewer perhaps initially reads a circle but, on closer inspection, an irregular spiral is revealed. For Carnell the piece is a metaphor for the human experience of time. Each new stitch represents a moment in time and as another is added so time passes and the piece builds. Then, stepping back from the piece, all the irregularities and individual stitches come together and the viewer experiences a singular beautiful form. So too is time reflected in the natural patina of the gold and leather which, as it matures, will acquire an even greater beauty as the years pass.
