About the Item

A delightful circa 1940 untitled patinated cast bronze bas-relief wall sculpture by Hideo depicting a pair of bathing women in original elm wood frame. Classical scene centers on a pair of long-haired and beautifully Rubenesque women on the shore of a stream, river, or lake. The exuberant figure at left is in the act of dousing herself with a raised vessel, while the figure at right sits casually sunning herself atop a rocky outcropping. Background has a natural-looking rough-hewn texture and dark brown applied patina with a predominantly raw umber tone and hints of burnt umber. The more raised elements of the figures are highlighted by a brighter bronze finish that’s been artistically burnished to ensure that the subjects’ forms and details subtly shine through. (Primary photo, secondary photo, and those that include the frame provide the most accurate representation of finish—other close-up photos appear a bit lighter.) Displays wonderful dimensionality throughout that’s altered and enhanced by various lighting conditions, as well as by one’s perspective as they move around the piece or lean in for a closer look. Signed “HIDEO” in mold at lower right. Presented in original custom Japanese elm wood frame with very handsome linear graining, ogee interior edge, beveled outer edge, and warm, dark finish. Back of frame features bowtie (aka butterfly) joinery, further speaking to its level of craftsmanship. Thin wood back panel retains a paper label fragment at upper right. Artist’s name, frame materials, and fabrication techniques suggest that this piece was created by a Japanese artist with a subject matter and style intended for a Western audience.
