"Jump Shot, " Model for Art Deco Bronze Basketball Award Plaque, 1940s

About the Item

Perhaps because it depicts its figures more as Greek athletes rather than modern players, this bronze Art Deco plaque is very rare, or possibly unique. The artist, Fred Torrey, depicts a Classic jump shot, with two virtually nude basketball players leaping up for the ball. Best known for his "Lincoln Walks at Midnight" sculpture which premiered at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair (now displayed near the West Virginia state capitol), Torrey also sculpted another Lincoln sculpture this is displayed on the grounds of the Iowa state capitol. This is one of three bronzes by Torrey depicting athletes in motion that we are offering.
