About the Item

Meeting between two worlds, 2015 Paloma Castello Woodcarving Overall size: 24 H in x 47.5 W x 1.1 D in. Edition 4/5 Individual size: -Condor Mirror 20.8 x 15.9 x 1.1 inches -Palm tree Mirror 21.6 x 15.9 x 1.1 inches -Orchids Mirror 24.2 x 15.7 x 1.1 inches The title of this work refers to the cultural exchange that took place after the Spaniards arrived in America. Meeting of Two Worlds consists of three convex Empire-style mirrors with unvarnished frames carved from savannah oak, a Colombian wood that grows in warm climates. Each of these mirrors is topped with a carved national symbol: a condor, orchid flowers, and a wax palm. The concept of national identity in Colombia is complex; our culture is a symbiosis, an ensemble of the traits of different cultures that, today, make us a mixture of several races, languages, and customs. Reflecting on the theme of national identity, I recall a visit I made to the Quinta de Bolivar in Bogotá. In the dining room of this residence, two stylish mirrors caught my attention. These mirrors seemed part of both a personal and a national memory: they stand in one of Colombia's most emblematic historical sites, and I myself grew up surrounded by historically-charged objects, some of them inherited from my ancestors, others which I purchased for myself. The mirrors at first appear as a symbol of identity. According to John E. Cirlot's "A Dictionary of Symbols", a mirror is an instrument of self-contemplation as well as the reflection of the universe. Many people associate them with the truth, since they faithfully reproduce the images they reflect. The mirror has also played a symbolic role throughout the history of art. Take, for example, Jan Van Eyck's famous "Arnolfini Marriage" (1434); the convex mirror in the background serves several functions: it captures the surroundings, functions as an eye, and as a testimony to the era in which it was painted. The mirror makes it possible to document stories based on a set of surroundings. It leads us to a metaphor that reveals the state of our history: conquests, armed conflict, and national struggles. Today, I return to the mirror and place it in a public space, in this case, an exhibition space. ___ Paloma Castello born 1988 Bogotá, Colombia. I use my work to bring life or a different narrative to an object’s past. I’m interested in playing with memory and relating it to the present, creating an atmosphere between reality and fiction. My family and social background have a powerful influence on my work. I grew up surrounded by objects and anecdotes inherited from my ancestors that inspire endless surreal stories. My work emerges from these experiences; they are evidence of my “auto-fiction”. "Paloma Castello presents to us a nostalgia-filled body of work. The collection represents the soul of her proposal: inherited objects discovered or found that have become the tip of the iceberg of her past. These are elements she collects, recollects, and then classifies following a method that frames her anachronic attitude that proves as evidence of the youth of her art. She also demonstrates that the experimentations on herself are common in an artist who’s just beginning her career. Without a doubt, this resource, valid and true becomes the road that determines the experimental character of the author.
