"Mining", Important, Rare Art Deco Bronze Panel, Fisher Bldg, Detroit by Maroti

About the Item

An extraordinary piece of American history and high style Art Deco design, this cast bronze panel depicting a stylized nude miner with pickaxe ready to strike, was designed by Géza Maróti for the lobby of the renowned Fisher Building in Detroit. Designed by Albert Kahn -- Detroit's leading architect for a wide range of industrial, residential and commercial buildings in the 1920s and 30s -- the Fisher Building was by far the most elaborate and richly decorated Art Deco building in Detroit, a city known for its architecture from that period. Kahn chose Maroti to design the sculptures and paintings throughout the building, including elevators that featured a series of allegorical reliefs celebrating Mining, as here, along with Agriculture, Finance, Music and Engineering. Maroti, a Hungarian artist who taught at Cranbrook Academy and contributed to many celebrated buildings in Michigan -- including the Kresge world headquarters -- was also a major figure in Budapest, designing sculpture for the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and Gresham Palace.
