One of A Kind House on Fire Lacquer on Steel Sculpture

About the Item

Richard Newton started making art in Chicago 1973 as a free-lance illustrator. His career began with diverse advertising and editorial assignments that ultimately lead to many commissions for magazine cover art. In 1978 his agent encouraged him to move to New York, the heart of the industry. That move facilitated four decades of prestigious assignments for national magazine covers, international ad campaigns and thousands of book covers for publishers all over the world. In 2010, Richard decided to pursue his passion for sculpture. Subsequently, he has had three major shows, one at Lincoln Center, NYC. His work is on permanent display at The Center for Jewish Life at Yale University and at Studio80 Sculpture Grounds Essex, CT. Richard resides in Connecticut with his lovely wife, two dogs and fourteen horses. Richard Newton’s sculpture is composed of lines and shapes that are messengers of movement. Surface textures, edges and colors are carefully worked in an effort to retain the energy of the raw materials. The intellectual content is derived from memories of psychological and emotional experiences. “My desire is to create sculptures that capture movement and energy allowing the viewer to connect with the underlying emotion in the work”.

Upon discovering a weathered steel drum that had been warped to resemble the sleeve of a garment, artist Gordon Chandler was inspired to embark on a series of kimono sculptures formed from found metal scraps. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests the reclaimed steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form. Flattened with the center portion rolled out, this discarded barrel takes on the look of a traditional kimono...
