"Harvest Scene with Male Nudes" by Cochet for Lachenal Ceramic Works, 1920s
By Raoul Lachenal
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Unique and striking, this wall plate by the famed Lachenal ceramic works in France depicts two nude male figures harvesting lush, broad-leafed plants in the field. The artist was clearly a painter and signed the piece "Cochet," suggesting that the artist may have been Gerard-Paul Cochet, who often painted harvest and rural scenes during his career. The ceramic works were founded by Edmond Lachenal, who was well known for his Art Nouveau ceramics...

Baroque Style Hand Carved Wooden Crucifix with Stunning Bronze Corpus of Christ
Located in Lisse, NL
Crucifix from the mid-1800s with a carved shroud or veil depicting Christ in the base. This unique and remarkable antique crucifix can both be used as a table and as a wall crucifix. Over the decades we have sold a number of unique and very well crafted crucifixes, but never one in the Baroque style with this combination of materials and techniques. The overall design and size is what stands out first, but the details and the materials are what make this antique work of religious art extraordinary. With four angels (or putti) watching over a sculpture of the Veil of Veronica, the relatively large base of this unique crucifix is a work of religious art in its own right. It is almost as if the cross is growing from this beautiful base and the cross itself too comes with a number of superbly hand carved details. To us, the most remarkable are the three stunning Baroque shells. With their symbolic meaning of birth and resurrection it is obvious why the artist / sculptor so tastefully incorporated them here. Apart from a minor 'lean' to the left, the cross itself too is in excellent condition. If one were to speak of a trinity in this crucifix then the unique base and cross are completed with an equally striking, solid bronze corpus of Christ...

Carved French Art Nouveau Hunt Plaque, Circa 1920
Located in Dallas, TX
In early 19th century France, the prevailing trend of architecture was known as Beaux-Arts. The style was based upon the fundamentals of neoclassicism, also incorporating Baroque and Renaissance ideas. Artistic endeavors of this period focused on the same principles, mainly rich texturing with very linear lines. In the late 1800’s, the French architect and historian, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, published his book, Entretiens sur l’architecture, which ushered in a new style known as Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau was inspired by elements in nature, with an emphasis on soft, supple lines and movement. With early Art Nouveau offerings, asymmetrical and stylized décor was paramount, as was non-parallel lines. Towards the end of the movement (after 1900), geometric shapes began to become popular, and decorative elements were more natural, as is the case with our hand-carved French hunt plaque...

Newly Discovered Pair of 1920s Cubist Frescoes by Eyre de Lanux
Located in New York, NY
Eyre de Lanux (1894-1996) hailed from a prominent Philadelphia family, and studied painting in New York under Robert Henri. After marrying a French diplomat at the end of the First World War, she moved to Paris, and became an apprentice to the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. A talented painter and sculptor, Lanux specialized in what she called fresco paintings, which she showed in Paris and New York at the galleries of Peggy Guggenheim and Alexander Iolas. Fresco, however, is a misnomer since they are painted in wet plaster, and hers were incised and sculpted in a wet concrete-like mixture that she painted when dry. The lines incised in this pair of panels from the 1920s are similar to those chiseled in stone by Brancusi, but the Cubist compositions were inspired by her friend Pablo Picasso, who. One of these still lives depicts a bottle of Gordon’s Gin, a martini glass with an olive, a pipe, a smoldering cigar, an ace of diamonds, an Ionic capital, stars, a mask, and what looks like a newspaper. The other depicts a bottle of VO Whisky, a seltzer bottle, a cut-glass tumbler, a lemon for a twist, an ace of hearts, dice, and a ukulele, on a background of books. They belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Simpson of New York, a Social Register couple who collected art by Modigliani, Picasso, Matisse, de Chirico, and Miró. Around 1927 they asked Lanux to decorate their Paris pied-a-terre. She painted the dining room terracotta, designed a table with a terracotta top, bought chairs from Jean-Michel Frank, and collaborated on a rug design with the weaver Evelyn Wyld...
