Phosphoriglyph: Wall-Mounted Sculpture in Copper by TJ Volonis

About the Item
Title: Phosphoriglyph
Year: 2015
Phosphoriglyph (“written upon Venus”) is a large-scale, wall-mounted sculpture executed entirely in half-inch copper tubing, taking its name from Phosphorus, known as Venus, the morning star, and even Lucifer (light bearer - as he was before his fall). The piece is part of the artist’s thematic commentary on humanity's destruction and failed recreation / subjugation of the natural world; The copper’s polished finish mimics the even, constant light of the stars and planets. Each piece is handmade and hand soldered and is one of a kind.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
A self-taught artist, TJ Volonis’ creative work incorporates a wide variety of themes: human biological processes, the natural world and man's relationship to it, hidden systems, technology and contemporary culture, and the implicit balance between order and chaos, among others. He views his work as a collaboration between the material with its limitations and his own intentions and designs.

After graduating, he moved to Brooklyn and has been a resident of the borough for the last 15 years, designing furniture and creating art for the last 11 of those years. He lives in Park Slope and works out of a metalworks studio in Gowanus.

- "Coil Closed Net" Wall-Mounted Coiled Cotton Fiber Sculpture by Doug JohnstonBy Doug JohnstonLocated in Brooklyn, NY-Made in 2014 -cotton cord, sewing thread, wood wall mount This piece was made by coiling a single length of cotton cord, and repetitively and discretely sewing the coil together with an industrial sewing machine. The cord is raw cotton and is sewn with red and navy blue sewing thread. The piece undulates in relief from the wall, and the excess sewing thread is left intact lending detail and texture. This piece was originally part of the "Brooklyn Nets" solo exhibition at Aberson Exhibits in Tulsa, OK in 2014 and has been included in several group exhibitions around the USA from 2015-2019. Since 2010 Doug Johnston has produced a wide range of functional and sculptural objects using a process of coiling and stitching rope using industrial sewing machines...Category
