Based on mathematical functions and algorithms, software generated design allows for the development of new forms and geometries that would be hard if not impossible to conceive or produce with the same precision by means of traditional methods, often blurring the line between the organic and the mathematical. One of the inherent characteristics of the digital medium is its generative quality, the possibility to produce evolving forms and structures by activating an algorithmic process. The computer in this case simply functions as a 'computing machine', producing the results of the complex rules and parameters dictated by the creator of the algorithm or generative process. For the 'Inferno' collection the artist created these algorithms in a procedural system such that he could twist and turn functional primitives into unrecognizable shapes, then added a noise function to deform the geometry into an altogether surreal form. Katz’s work borrows imagery and textures from the natural world - the tables, sculptures and vases frequently feature the mathematical precision of forms found in flower petals, or the chaotic and random arrangement of water droplets, ripples, and sparks - while evoking a sense of wonder in the viewer via their seamless finish and striking compositions. Combining form, function, and a playful and liberated approach towards geometry and abstraction; Katz Studio is a place of experimentation and discovery; a place where the imaginary becomes real.
