In early 19th century France, the prevailing trend of architecture was known as Beaux-Arts. The style was based upon the fundamentals of neoclassicism, also incorporating Baroque and Renaissance ideas. Artistic endeavors of this period focused on the same principles, mainly rich texturing with very linear lines. In the late 1800’s, the French architect and historian, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, published his book, Entretiens sur l’architecture, which ushered in a new style known as Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau was inspired by elements in nature, with an emphasis on soft, supple lines and movement. With early Art Nouveau offerings, asymmetrical and stylized décor was paramount, as was non-parallel lines. Towards the end of the movement (after 1900), geometric shapes began to become popular, and decorative elements were more natural, as is the case with our hand-carved French hunt plaque...
