About the Item

A rare 18th-century mahogany Cockpen armchair. George III period, ca 1762. A stylish antique Cockpen armchair in mahogany. With chinoiserie open-fretwork frame and angle brackets. Some very minor historic restorations entirely commensurate with age - in excellent condition throughout. Sturdy in all its joints and ready-to-use. Now covered in fine upholstery. Nb. There are numerous late-19th and 20th-century copies of this design. Ours on offer here, however, is a sophisticated Georgian desk chair, or occasional armchair, of good colour and patination. Ralph Edwards CBE FSA ‘A Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’ Hamlyn, London (Fourth Impression 1972) p. 150, ill. 132, documents a similar armchair dated circa 1765. Interestingly Percy Macquoid RI in ‘A History of English Furniture – The Age of Mahogany’ illustrates a very similar mahogany armchair, Bracken, London (1904-1908) p. 298, fig. 682. Property of the Duke of Beaufort. ''One of a set and particularly pleasing in shape; it corresponds in design to the table fig. 676.'' Sebastian Pryke ‘The 18th Century Furniture Trade in Edinburgh’. Sebastian Pryke ‘Cockpen Quest’, Country Life, 29th April 1993. The family pew of the Earls and Marquesses in Cockpen Church formerly contained examples in this manner. A more intricately designed latticework chair was produced by Thomas Chippendale, and became known as the 'Chinese Chippendale' style. Chippendale’s 1762 Director includes several plates depicting the chair style, and 2 pages of “Chinese railings”. Blind- and open-fretwork” throughout the mid-18th century repeats this pattern of asymmetrical intersecting lines. Although the Cockpen chair thrived in Scotland during the second half of the 18th century, the term Cockpen appears not to have been used during this period. Cockpen-area furniture derives its name from the Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church, Bonnyrigg, near Edinburgh, Scotland.

A very good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough armchair, circa 1760. This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough library armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period. With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports.   Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back. The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick carving. Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina. In excellent condition with a sturdy frame throughout. A fine English mid-18th century mahogany secretaire / secretary / bookcase / china cabinet. Of lovely, deep, rich color, patina and quality. George III-period, circa 1760. The bold, detachable, swan-neck pediment carved with 'Gothic' open fretwork, spiral rosettes and a dentil cornice. The pediment is centred by a small platform below which is a fluted panel. The bookcase / china cabinet section with two, thirteen-pane glazed doors, with three original adjustable shelves with applied beadings for the display of china etc. The base with a pull-out writing section fitted with small drawers, two of which have secret releases. These secret drawers are faced with blind-fret 'Gothic' tracery, and centred by a carved, shaped arch. The base with three cock-beaded drawers, and raised on its original bracket feet which are faced with blind fret. This fine, sophisticated and well-proportioned example of a secretaire / secretary / cabinet / desk / bookcase is remarkable for having survived in its original state including all swan-neck handles and locks. Of superb quality, color, patination, and well figured throughout. With mahogany drawer linings: further confirmation of its superlative quality. This magnificent pair of French late 18th Century- early 19th Century armchairs could be attributable to Jacob-Desmalter, an outstanding chairmaker and cabinetmaker who worked in the Louis XVI style and Directoire styles of the earlier phase of Neoclassicism. These sturdy armchairs are made of solid mahogany and green silk upholster, they feature an extremely comfortable high and slightly arched back and quite large and extremely firm seats. The hand-made carvings and inlays are masterfully executed. The over graceful scrolled arms and the top rail sculpted in shallow relief with acanthus leaves, lotus leaves and rosette, all typical neoclassical patterns beloved during the Directory- Restauration and Empire period and always very chic. The bowed seat and its apron are raised by carved console legs in front and saber legs back. These armchairs with their beautiful curvy shape are very stylish, comfortable and sturdy.
