About the Item

The polish on this inky-black jade bangle is so high, it appears to be spinning. Bring it near a window; you will see a perfect reflection of the window and everything outside of it. But the interior of the bangle is not high-polish; rather it has somehow been given a satin-finish. It is so perfectly smooth to the touch. You can see, almost, how it might feel to touch it in the images. The outside of the bangle: like the Eight Ball from a pool table. The inside of the bangle: like something you want next to your skin. The lapidary work on this magnificent bangle is, to state the obvious, impeccable. The jade —which is the omphacite variety of jade, as opposed to either nephrite or jadeite— is so bottomless-black that the subtle curve of the wide bangle warps the light as the light glides across the surface like a living, ghostly thing. The opening measures 67.39 inches so it will fit somebody with medium or larger hands. Fine, large bangles are difficult to find. One must often commission their creation, as I have done here. The bangle is 23.73mm (1 inch) wide; a traditional bangle would be about 8mm wide. The bangle is 77.05mm from one outside edge to the other. It is a bit over 5mm thick so it's a wide, thin, and elegant bangle. I am a second-generation jade collector and have been collecting jade since I was a very young child. Most all the jade I sell is certified by Stone Group Labs. This bangle could not be certified as natural and untreated because sometimes with black jadeite or omphacite, the opacity prevents the technology that is used to detect pigment to function. So while they didn't detect any evidence of any dye, they could not prove the bangle was undyed. I am wholly convinced the bangle is 100% natural. It's just very, very black. Normally, black jade is actually green when you shine light through it and this jade has no opacity. Though when I suspend it from a string and strike it gently with a pencil, it rings out, and the tone hangs high in the air until it fades. No dyed or polymer-impregnated bangle I have ever owned has ever passed this old-school acoustic test. A treated bangle does not ring. An untreated bangle rings like a crystal glass when you rub a wet finger around the rim. Although some untreated bangles don't ring. But no treated bangle does. At least not that I have ever encountered. This is a magnificent and rare hand-carved bangle of excruciating beauty.
