About the Item

The iconic San Francisco store known as Gump's became world-famous for their exceptionally fine jade jewelry. My grandmother was a collector of Gump's jade and I grew up obsessed with it. When I lived in San Francisco in the 1980s I walked past the Gump's flagship store on my way to work every morning. Though it's always difficult to obtain genuine vintage Gump's jade jewelry, their bangles are particularly elusive. I simply never find them for sale. Like certain Gump's rings and necklaces, they are passed down in families and difficult or even impossible to obtain. The vintage gemmy green Gump's nephrite jade and 14K yellow gold hinged bangle you see here is from the 1990s. The closure features two safety catches and no safety chain. The lack of a safety chain means this bangle can be worn by more people because safety chains limit the size of the opening through which you must insert your hand. But with this bangle, you simply bypass the hand altogether and clamp the bangle around your wrist. The exterior diameter is 76mm and the interior diameter is 58mm. This is the standard size for a jade bangle. If this were a one-piece bangle, small hands would be required to slide through the opening. But because its hinged, even I can wear the bangle, making it totally unisex. My left wrist is 7 ¼ in circumference so while I can close this bangle around my wrist, it doesn't really move. But it's also not uncomfortable or tight. So guys: if you want to wear this bangle, your wrist shouldn't be larger in circumference than mine. Measure with a tape measure. I have it on my wrist right now as I write these words and it's totally comfortable and I know I'm going to regret listing it (and the other Gump's bangle I own) but I'm a collector, not a wear-er and a Gump's bangle should be worn. I have two jade bangles from Gump's. I've never had the opportunity to purchase others because I simply haven't encountered them. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of the most highly sought-after and collectible jade in the world: Gump's jade. This nephrite is a translucent leaf-green of extraordinary quality. Fully hallmarked for metal fineness and the Gump's name.
