About the Item

Bakelite is a resin material that was produced in the early 1900's and was the first plastic substance made of synthetic components. Initially used for its electrically non conductive and heat resistant properties in radio and telephone castings, the material was also used in other products such as kids' toys, kitchenware and jewelry. Typically made of bold, beautiful colors, Bakelite has become very collectible over recent years and is appreciated amongst many. A fantastic and funky Bakelite bracelet from the Retro (ca1940s) era! This fashionable bangle has a black base color, and the bracelet is decorated with two parallel rows of creamed corn colored oval-shaped dots. The colors complement each other perfectly and give the piece a very bold look that would add a great pop of color to any ensemble. The bracelet slips on and off easily and would look fabulous worn alone or stacked with other similar bangles. A fun and eye catching piece, it is perfect for the Bakelite collector and would make a versatile addition to any jewelry collection! Measurements: The inside of the bracelet (where a wrist would rest) has a diameter of 2 5/8" across. The surface of the bracelet measures 7/8" wide and is approximately 1/2" thick. Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there are no apparent chips, scratches, or damage to the Bakelite.

1940's Carved Butterscotch Bakelite Bangle
Located in Maywood, NJ
Dr. Leo Bakeland invented Bakelite in the early 1900s. Bakeland discovered that the material would cool quickly and wouldn’t melt, regardless of the temperatures. He took out a patent on the idea in 1907. The material was heated to a melting point and then poured into molds and sheets to create the different pieces. It was used for a number of things including toys and for electronics parts. The material was never meant to be expensive, but to give those without a lot of money access to quality pieces. Many companies stopped using Bakelite in the early 1940s as the need for World War II related products took hold. By the end of the War, new technologies in the world of plastics had made Bakelite obsolete. The height of Bakelite jewelry...
