About the Item

Along with the "Wirtschaftswunder", the so-called economic miracle of the 1950s, jewellery grew bigger, bolder and more colourful. Often using copious amounts of massive yellow gold, fine jewellery of the 1950s is usually set with diamonds and luxurious coloured gemstones, reflecting the new-found wealth of the era. Next to creative figural brooches, bracelets and bangles were one of the most desirable status symbols of the time. The bangle at hand is a particularly luxurious one, combining the highest standards in materials and craftsmanship. Seven large, untreated natural sapphires in blue and yellow are the focal points of the design, separated by diamonds on a cuff of glossy yellow gold. The pastel-coloured sapphires are beautifully transparent and almost free of inclusions. The bangle has been preserved in its original box by master goldsmith Günter Winkler of Augsburg, Germany, who crafted the piece in the mid-1950s. At the time of the economic boom, Winkler was exceedingly successful with his bold designs, crafted of luxurious materials and displaying impeccable craftsmanship. His competence was honoured with the presidency of the German goldsmith's union (1949-52) as well as with the "Goldene Ehrennadel" (Golden pin of honour) awarded by the central union of German goldsmiths in 1958. The bangle is in excellent condition. Untreated sapphires of this size are a truly lucky find, barely ever found in modern pieces and guaranteeing a stable value for years to come. An independent gemological certificate has therefore been issued by a renowned German institute and will be delivered along with the bangle.
