Victorian antique buckle Whitby Jet bracelet, collectible, expandable circa 1880

About the Item

Superb antique Whitby Jet bracelet, very popular during the Victorian era. Many workshops were dedicated to crafting this material, and the demand for it increased significantly. Today, Whitby Jet is considered rare and collectible. It is valued for its historical significance, aesthetic appeal, and the unique story behind its formation. A bit of history: Whitby Jet is a type of fossilized wood found in the North Yorkshire area of England. It's known for its deep black color and is often used in jewelry. Whitby Jet is considered a semi-precious gemstone and is relatively soft, so it needs to be treated with care. Whitby Jet is formed from the fossilized remains of trees that grew millions of years ago during the Jurassic period. The unique conditions of pressure and lack of oxygen caused the wood to transform into this dense, black material. It is often found along the coastline of North Yorkshire. Measurements: Length: approximately 20 centimetres Weight: 25.90 grams Note: Many of my items are vintage and are therefore likely to show some age-related wear. This can include things such as: scratches, discolouration etc. Please be sure to look through each photograph carefully and read the description fully, to get an idea of quality. The buckle is split in two places, please see photos for details. Import taxes are buyer’s responsibility!
