About the Item

Art Deco Synthetic* Sapphire and Diamond Geometric Bracelet in Platinum and Gold, Portugal, 1920s-1930s, Signed by Tinoco & Irmão. This antique bracelet is designed as a sequence of 17 openwork geometric squared panels depicting a cathedral motif, decorated with a moon-shape synthetic sapphire of a deep blue color, one natural Old European brilliant-cut diamond and 11 natural rose-cut diamonds, all stones grain- and millegrain-set in open-back settings. Each panel is seamlessly articulated to the next, leading to a click-shut clasp further secured with a figure-of-eight safety catch fitting. *Synthetic (or lab-grown) sapphires and rubies were widely used in Art Deco jewels during the 1920s-1930s. Back then, due to their color consistency and flawless clarity, flame-fusion synthetic sapphires were considered a modern improvement over their natural counterparts, the differences discernible only by trained gemologists with the right tools. Old European brilliant-cut diamonds approximately 0.85 carats in total. Rose-cut diamonds approximately 3 carats in total. Signed "TINOCOS"; maker's mark for Oporto jeweler Tinoco & Irmão (reg. 1919 and canceled in 1989); Oporto "tiger" mark for 19.2kt gold (used 1887-1937); another indistinct mark. Dimensions: 18 x 1.0 cm. Gross weight: 26.5g. This item is in good condition, with marks and scratches consistent with general age and wear. Antique, period and vintage pieces, both signed and unsigned, are being offered as worn.
