Victorian Sterling Silver Niello Link Bracelet
About the Item
Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.
This fantastic Victorian (ca1880s) bracelet is an excellent example of the Niello art form! The bracelet, which was crafted in 1870 in sterling silver, features 6 rectangular-links, which are connected by small ribbed ellipse links. The surface of each rectangular link is adorned with intricate Niello detailing, which includes intricate scrolling motifs. The four corners are each link feature rose-gold hued three-dimensional balls, which wonderfully complement the ribbed connectors. The bracelet secures with a large spring ring clasp and watch swivel clasp, which also feature Niello detailing. A fantastic bracelet, this piece would make a lovely addition to any Victorian-era jewelry collection!
Measurements: The bracelet measure 7" long. Each link is 5/8" long and 3/8" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the sterling setting or to the Niello pattern. The spring ring and watch swivel clasps are both secure and in working order.
