About the Item
Around the time the Tennis Bracelet debuted into polite society, the classic tennis color combination was generally white and navy. The year was 1978. This was before players got clothing endorsements or even racquet endorsements for that matter, and they certainly had not started to design their own tennis dresses in every imaginable color. It was a time of classic minimalism. At Wimbledon, the dress code was—and is—all white. Players were only permitted a single trim of color around the neckline and around the cuff of the sleeves, but no wider than one centimeter (10mm). But the tournament where the iconic tennis bracelet was born was the US Open, and there was a bit more leeway.
This Contemporary Sapphire Baguette Diamond Stripe Line Tennis Bracelet, made by Spectra Fine Jewelry in 2022, would have been permitted, even celebrated. But likely not at Wimbledon, because it is just a bit wider than 10mm. Crafted in 18K white gold, the 6.5-inch long by 0.4-inch wide (165.1 x 10.16 mm) bracelet features five articulated rows comprised of 45 white diamond baguettes with an estimated weight of 2.36 carats total and 135 blue sapphire baguettes with an estimated weight of 13.19 carats total. The stones are all the same size, arranged in a regularized staggered pattern to look almost woven from afar, and linear, sleek, and dazzling close-up. Each stone is oriented lengthwise, bookended by white gold bars. These linked and flexible bar settings use two vertical rectangles of metal on either side of the diamond to secure it, while also allowing light to enter the stones. The perpendicular lines of the bars make for a spectacular overall design with a pleasing rhythm. The staggered arrangement of gems at either end is simply sublime. Of course it is functional too so the clasp can join the puzzle pieces together seamlessly without interrupting the pattern.
Once called an eternity bracelet, and before that in the 1920s, a diamond line bracelet, the tennis bracelet got its name when Chris Evert, the #1 women’s singles player at the time, lost her bracelet during an early round match at the US Open and insisted play be paused until she found it. The good news is, she did, and this iconic style was relaunched and rebranded, so to speak. Typically a tennis, eternity, or line bracelet features a single strand of gemstones of all the same color, cut, type, and shape, all held in individual flexible settings, be they bezel or prong. This fabulous example breaks all the rules, and gives us more rows, more gems, more pattern and color, and more spectacle. What could be more American than that?
Measures approx. 6.5” in length x 0.4” in width. 135 blue sapphires weighing approx. 13.19 carats total. 45 white diamonds weighing approx. 2.36 carats total, mostly with G color, VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 54.19 grams, made in 18k white gold. Circa 21st Century.
