This antique brooch is in excellent condition.
This is a wonderfully detailed and intricate brooch. From the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, this piece was created in around 1880. In the 1860s, there were widespread excavations of Egypt done by teams of European archaeologists. A large collection of Egyptian antiquities was displayed at the 1867 Exposition Universalle in Paris. From that point onwards, Ancient Egypt captured the imaginations of nineteenth-century Europeans. This brooch features a perfectly and exquisitely carved calcedony in the shape of the head of a Pharaoh. This Pharaoh’s face is captured in wonderful and miniscule detail. Surrounding the face is the pattern of outstretched wings, which are decorated in enamel, filigree, and micro granulation. Filigree and micro granulation were techniques used by ancient civilizations. This is an enchanting and memorable piece.
Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.

For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. With the discoveries of Egyptian tombs, and the treasures within, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exotically opulent lives of the Pharaohs were beyond anyone’s imagination. Of all the precious objects unearthed in the tombs, the lavish jewels were perhaps the most fascinating for their extravagance and never-before-seen symbolism. The Roaring Twenties and the period’s Art Deco jewelry embraced the vivid contrasting colors, motifs, and symbols more daringly than ever before. Whether the jewels were complete, faithful reproductions or real artifacts preciously decorated in similar style, the Egyptian Revival jewelry during the Art Deco era is the most lavish and magnificent.
The brooch is 3 5/8 inches (9.2cm) wide and is 1 inch (26mm) tall.
The brooch is hallmarked on the back with 800 for 800 Silver which was the silver standard for most Continental jewelry...

Revival is always happening in the jewelry world.
The Indiana Jones inside all of us is always enticed by the buried loot of the ancients. It’s one of the reasons Egyptian Revival jewelry is so alluring.
Luckily for jewelry connoisseurs the span of history that have laid way to an aesthetic resurgence and intense interest in all things Egyptian during the last two hundred years.
Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign in 1798 ignited the West’s fascination with motifs we have all come to associate with Egyptian Revival—sphinxes, pyramids, palmettes, papyrus leaves. This curiosity was further stimulated by the excitement surrounding the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, after 10 years of construction, arousing a real revival of the Egyptian style, with jewelers specifically incorporating artifacts that were thousands of years old, faience in the shapes of falcons and scarabs, set into jewels framed by vermilion enamel and lapis lazuli.
Some of the highlights in the 19th century timeline of Egyptomania include the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, displays at World’s Fairs and the moment when Cleopatra’s Needle...
