19th Century En Tremblant Diamond Brooch

About the Item

This brooch is a glamorous piece of history! The pin is most likely from the 1880s with the French term 'en tremblant' meaning 'to tremble'. This kineticism was achieved by coiling springs of metal and attaching motifs such as florals or dragonfly wings as a way to make them scintillate. The flower as seen is fastened in this manner. This piece is made of silver with a layer of gold along the back as well as a gold stick pin to prevent silver tarnish from transferring to the wearer's clothes. This confirms the age in a time before platinum was widely used as a white metal in jewelry. It is set with approximately 6.60 carats of mixed-cut diamonds, mainly old mine cut, but several appear to have been replaced over time with more modern round brilliants.
