Abstract Frog Brooch with Diamonds, Moonstone & Tourmaline in 18 Karat Gold
About the Item
This heavy, unusual and graphic 18 karat yellow gold frog brooch has moonstone eyes, a tourmaline back, diamond toes and a soft, shimmery matte satin finish.
The six diamonds are nice and bright bezel-set brilliant cuts. We rate them G-H color and VS2 clarity.
The moonstone eyes are lustrous and lively, with a fairly pronounced cats eye effect in certain lighting situations.
The center stone (according to the limited testing we can do with a set cabochon) is most likely a tourmaline or an aquamarine. We're guessing tourmaline; regardless, the stone doesn't have much color -- a suggestion of green -- but it does have lots of interesting, thready inclusions.
Because he's so heavy - over two ounces! - the frog's back has double pin hardware. Note that the pin hardware is 14 karat gold.
The back is signed, but we haven't been able to identify the maker's mark, which might be the initials "UAB." Or not.
We acquired this pin in a large personal collection of frog brooches, and they were all purchased or commissioned new, between 1980 and 2010, so this pin dates from that period, and we think 2000 is a safe bet.
Excellent condition; this pin was well-cared for and shows no signs of wear.
