"Webster" Diamond & Ruby Frog Pendant in Yellow Gold with Tourmaline Bead Chain
About the Item
Webster and his web of gold and diamonds make a gorgeous splash hanging from a string of multi-colored tourmaline beads.
This one-of-a-kind piece was created by Eytan Brandes. The frog, originally a brooch made around 1960, is by Cellino, which produced many iconic mid-century designs, including massive swag brooches, humorous figural pieces (poodles!) and pieces with blue and green enamel. Our frog has the distinctive Florentine finish perfected in Italy, and, of course, it's 18 karat gold. The eyes are set with 2mm ruby cabochons -- dark but strong pink, probably around 0.05 carats each.
The "web" was a piece of unsuccessful 14K yellow gold studio jewelry. It was apparently one of several plates that were to be linked together, like chain mail, but the project was abandoned and ended up in our shop, filed under "Interesting But What Do We Do With It?" The surface of the web was littered with little bumps and nodules, so Eytan used some of them as prongs, left some of them alone, and cut off the rest. He used the prongs to set three extremely peppery diamonds. These stones are natural (i.e., earth-mined) diamonds, but they are very low clarity due to interesting, large crystal formations in very prominent locations. These diamonds, totalling 0.68 carats, are described in more detail at the end of this description.
The chain is a string of faceted 3.5mm natural tourmaline rondelles in a range of pinks and golds and browns. It's finished with a cool vintage magnetic clasp (very strong) in 14 karat gold.
The total length of this necklace is 17". Note that we can restring the pendant on any length of chain you want, and if you prefer a metal chain, we can source one for you and do all the required surgery. Just contact us for details, options and pricing.

THE DERANGED DIAMONDS: Moving left to right, the stones are described below:
Diamond A is a round, brilliant cut stone, 3.5mm in diameter and 0.16 carats. It's the cleanest and smallest of the three stones with a signficiant black crystal hiding under one prong. Eytan rates it J color and SI2 or I1 clarity.
Diamond B is cushion-shaped and brilliant cut. It's 4.3mm square and 0.30 carats. It has a long, thick black crystal growing right under the table and another smaller crystal off to the side. While the rest of the stone isn't too bad, those big black crystals are hard to miss, even with the naked eye. Eytan rates this stone I-J color and I3 clarity.
Diamond C is round, brilliant cut, 3.9mm and weighs 0.22 carats. It has a nutty heart-shaped black crystal right under the table, and a big bubbly cloud in the pavilion. Eytan rates this stone J color and I3 clarity.
