Antique 15K Yellow Gold Emerald, Ruby and Pearl Swallow Brooch
About the Item
An antique ruby, emerald, pearl, and yellow gold brooch, formed in the shape of a swallow, comprising one ruby cabochon, nine round cut emeralds, and thirty-three seed pearls, set in 15 karat yellow gold, with 15 karat yellow gold pin and fittings.
This brooch is classic of the late Victorian, to early Edwardian era, with wonderful detail and realistic styling. The brooch is formed as a swallow in flight, with its wings outstretched, and beak slightly open. The eye of the swallow is a vibrant ruby cabochon, which is surrounded by round cut emeralds, which come together to create the head of the bird. The emeralds are a vibrant, fresh green, and are well-matched with one another. The body and wings of the swallow are set with seed pearls of varying sizes, which are wonderfully lustrous, with a pale, creamy tone. The tail of the swallow and the tips of the wings have been textured, to give the appearance of feathers. The brooch is fitted with a gold safety catch, and the pin, too, is gold. The brooch is beautifully made and is wonderfully tactile, showing exceptional craftsmanship. The brooch is in great condition, with some tiny lettering etched on the back of the brooch, appearing to suggest it was sold at auction at some point, which must have been some time ago, as this is not usual practise now. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The brooch measures 28mm high, 38.5mm wide, and is 5mm deep (excluding brooch fittings).
