Antique 18 Carat Pietra-Dura Oval Flower Brooch with Gold Mount, c1860

About the Item

Mosaics were a popular souvenirs from Italy for people on the Grand Tour. They are also known as Florentine Mosaics and they speak to the romanticism that flourished throughout Victorianism beginning about 1850. Our brooch was made in the Florence region from various hard stones. Our 18K Pietra Dura brooch has fine Pietra Dura floral green, robin's eggs blue, yellow and white inlay colors. The 18K gold mount is actually triple mounted 1. the outside border is a thick, solid border of gold; 2. a lovely detail of 8 symmetrically placed delicate gold rope "X's" capped with a small gold ball, wrapped around that and 3. a slender delicate gold rope inside border frames the mosaic. The final touch is the smooth mother-of-pearl on the underside (pictured). Our brooch is 2 3/4 inches in height and 2 inches wide.
