Antique Aluminium Brooch
About the Item
Unusual Victorian pin of aluminum, "amethyst" paste, gilt metal and mother of pearl. The aluminum is embossed with a foliate design. A bold and striking piece to wear on a shoulder or on a shawl. Aluminum was first shown at the Paris exhibition of 1855. It was made in such limited quantities that it was considered rare and was used to make jewelry. Very few pieces still exist. The pin measures 2" long by 1 3/4" wide by 1/2" deep.
