Antique Demantoid and Diamond Salamander Brooch, circa 1880

About the Item

Antique Victorian demantoid garnet and diamond salamander brooch. Remarkable for a number of reasons, this salamander brooch survives today in superb condition. Small, figural fauna were a frequent theme of late 19th century jewelry. Set in silver topped gold are 36 mine cut diamonds and 28 very rare and desirable demantoid (green) garnets, one of which is quite unusual due to its size (approximately 0.70 cts.). Demantoid garnets are rarely available today. Whatever deposits had existed at the turn of the century, they were basically available only in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Today, these deposits are largely if not virtually depleted. This cute little guy is just under 3 inches, he has two natural Burma ruby as eyes, and the pin stem is removable - this was done so that a different pin assemble could be screwed-in and then worn in a hat or possible in the hair. The piece is in excellent condition and all original - including its early "c" clasp. Throughout history, salamanders were seen as guardian spirits, and symbols of regeneration, transformation, and the ability to withstand flames. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed appraisal by our gemologist, as well as all original GIA certificates, if specified in listing. As always, we guarantee all of pieces. Each piece of jewelry arrives in a finely gift-wrapped presentation box.
