About the Item

Antique diamond comet brooch from the mid-19th century. Silver topped rose gold with an estimated 3.55 cts. of old European and old mine cut diamonds, estimated to be K (faint color), and slightly included. During the 19th century, and earlier, diamonds were always set in silver and backed in gold. This was done not only to keep the clothes from getting silver tarnish on them, but also diamonds were always to be set in a white metal and since platinum had yet to be discovered only silver was available. Comets were a popular motif during the 19th century to commemorate the cosmic sightings. Our brooch is a wonderful example. The pinstem unscrews. This was done so that the lady could wear the piece in another form of jewelry such as the centerpiece of a tiara. This brooch would also look stunning as a pendant. A flip up/down bale could be added, if desired. The model in our photographs is of medium stature. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed Statement of Value by our gemologist, as well as all original gemological documentation, if specified in the listing.
