Antique Edwardian 9K Yellow Peridot and Pearl Halley’s Comet Brooch

About the Item

An Edwardian peridot, pearl, and yellow gold brooch, comprising one round cut peridot, and seven seed pearls, set in 9 karat yellow gold, with 9 karat yellow gold pin and fittings. I believe this brooch to be a Halley’s comet brooch. Halley’s comet is a comet which is visible from the earth every 75-79 years. As it is such a rarity to see this comet, throughout history, jewellery designed to resemble the comet has been made to commemorate its passing through the sky. These jewels are characterised by a tapered design, often with a cluster of gemstones to one end, like this brooch. Very popular in the Georgian era, it is less common to see one from 1910. This unusual Edwardian brooch is designed as a stylised, openwork comet. A round cut peridot (creating the nucleus of the comet) is set within a millegrain edged bezel setting, surrounded by a halo of yellow gold (creating the coma of the comet). The peridot is bright, and vibrant, a zesty green, with excellent clarity. Pearl set leaves give way to a shining bead of gold, terminating with a larger seed pearl. The pearls are pale, lustrous and shimmering, and are well-matched with one another. The tail of the comet is formed as a plain, polished, yellow gold bar, which tapers to the terminal. The brooch is complete with catch, hinged pin, and loop for a safety chain to be attached. The brooch is in great condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The brooch measures 76mm long, 12mm wide, and 4.5mm deep (excluding pin). Peridot weight, estimated: 0.57ct Pearl size, each, estimated: 1mm – 2.3mm Gross weight: 3.8g Hallmarks: stamped ‘9C’, circa 1910
