Antique Shell Scallop Lava Stone Vesuv Grand Tour Souvenir St.James Pilgrimage
About the Item
This lovely junky scallop shell has been hand carved out of lava in the first half of the nineteenth century. Scallops were the symbol of pilgrims that walked the camino de Santiago or the way of St, James,, they often had a scallop stitched onto their hats or clothes.
The silver pin with the safety catch is a later addition.
