Antique Grand Tour Acropolis Parthenon Brooch Silver Silver Gilt Granulation
About the Item
This unusual brooch features a typical Greek Grand Tour image, that of the Acropolis and the Parthenon. In an oval frame we see the cut out silver gilt image of parts of the Acropolis, the Parthenon and a few clouds, highlighted in rose gold gilding. The Parthenon was the temple consecrated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens.
The symbol of Athena was the owl. A stylized version of an owl's head can be found in many architectural features all over Athens, in this brooch the stylized heads made from twisted silver wire are used to make up the frame of the oval center piece with the parthenon. The eyes of the owls are made out of granulated silver beads. The owls heads alternate with marcasites in high round settings. The back of the brooch is marked with an impressed 1000 for pure silver.
The brooch has been photographed with its uncleaned patina, however can be polished if so wished.
