Antique Victorian Scottish Agate Citrine Fly Plaid Brooch and Pin, circa 1860

About the Item

An exquisite antique Scottish fly plaid brooch, beautifully preserved from the mid-Victorian era (Circa 1860). The large silver brooch is a classic Scottish belt and buckle design and ringed with a colourful collection of agates which encircle a trio of high relief, silver thistles, topped with orange pastes. Scottish jewellery grew in popularity in the mid-1800s and was a personal favourite of Queen Victoria’s. Thistles were one popular motif and the national flower of Scotland, symbolising strength, protection, and unity. The brooch is accompanied by a long tail made up of faceted barrel agates and golden citrines and leads to a long pin topped with an agate sphere. The pair would have traditionally been worn as a decorative fastener for a Scottish fly plaid, which were worn over the shoulder along with a kilt. It’s a remarkable and highly collectable antique treasure, boasting a fabulous array of natural agates and citrines.
