About the Item
Amazing and beautiful Gold reproduction of the famous Agamemnon mask, a Mycenaean work, in 18k gold. The face is represented on a sheet of matte gold, whose details perfectly follow those of the original mask. On the back the gold takes on a shiny finish, and the contrast is found on one of the sides. It can be worn as a brooch or as a pendant. A perfect, original and elegant complement.
About Agamemnon's mask
The mask of Agamemnon, dated to around 1,550 BC. It was discovered on the acropolis of Mycenae in 1876 by archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann.
It is a funerary mask, made of gold, that was found placed over the face of the body of who they thought could be the legendary Greek king Agamemnon. However, archaeological studies confirmed that it was from an earlier time, despite which it retained the name. It was found to be part of a very rich trousseau, full of crowns, other masks, swords, cups... They were the first samples of Mycenaean art that came to light.
Worked from the back using the embossing technique in a very fine gold sheet, based on a model made of wood, it is a simple and schematic representation of a male face, although with a clear intention of presenting an individualized model.
Although he is represented with his eyes closed, immersed in the deep sleep of death, the details of the beard, nose and eyebrows, which stand out against the smooth surface of the mask, enhance the portrait's expression of severe sovereignty. Its beauty and the history of its discovery are part of the myth of Greece.
