Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes:
Carlo Giuliano's history in London and accomplishments as a beloved royal jeweler are well documented, but his antecedents in Italy are less well known. By tradition, he is associated with the Castellani family, but he does not appear in Augusto's extensive diaries. Instead, he may have been trained in Alessandro Castellani's workshop in Naples, where Alessandro, a passionate republican and Italian nationalist, had fled after the failed revolution in Rome in 1860.
